Adderall is a drug that is meant for treating the patients suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or simply ADHD. This drug is a combination of amphetamine salts such as racemic amphetamine aspirate monohydrate, racemic amphetamine sulfate, dextroamphetamine sulfate and dextroamphetamine saccharide and is available both in instant release (IR) and extended release (XR) versions. Like many other drugs, Adderall too has many side effects that range from minors ones to major ones in terms of severity. Besides Adderall side effects can also be classified as temporary and permanent which should be clearly discussed with the doctor before using the drug.
Adderall should be taken once or twice in a day in doses of 20 milligrams. Usually the physician starts with little doses which will be increased slowly until the desired effects are achieved. This is to ensure that the Adderall side effects do not disrupt the health of the patient. When allowed to be taken in small amounts initially, the doctor can decide whether the drug suits the body of the patient or not. Also taking heavy doses of drug in the beginning has the probability of worsening the ADHD symptoms while the gradual increase in the doses will help in reducing the intensity of some of the symptoms.
The doctors should clearly check the medical history of the patient before recommending Adderall to him or her. Some of the common Adderall side effects are headache, nervousness, dizziness, restlessness, weight loss, loss of appetite, dry mouth, stomach pain, trouble in sleep etc. If the patient is known to have suffering from congenital heart problems or gastrointestinal problems or any thyroid problems the patient should be carefully watched during the period of medication as all the patients do not respond the same to Adderall.
While the above mentioned are some of the common side effects, the severe Adderall side effects include heavy increase in the blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, high pulse rate, migraine, difficulty in breathing, allergies in eyes and throat such as swelling or becoming red, chest pain, seizures, uncontrollable shaking, blurred vision, serious mood swings, severe aggression, extreme nervousness, paranoid delusions, depression etc. While some of the patients are capable of tolerating the drug in low dosages with quite minimal side effects, some others are subjected to side effects that are very grave in nature.
Adderall when taken in heavy doses aims at the respiratory system and heart resulting in either temporary or permanent damages. In some fateful situations, Adderall led to heavy stokes and sudden death in the patients who were already suffering from heart related problems. Sometimes it also reacts with the medications meant for curing other diseases and produces damaging side effects. Adderall effects the growth and development in children if it is taken for a long period of time. One of the important Adderall side effects is that it stunts growth and restricts weight gain in children which eventually lead to greater complications relating to development. The usage of the drug by pregnant women has led to premature births in some instances and birth of babies with low weight in others. In some situations they also caused withdrawal symptoms in the pregnant women.
Adderall has the capability of stimulating the central nervous system because of which it is used for controlling symptoms and enhancing the brain activity in those suffering from ADHD. However this medication is meant only for a short term and the prolonged usage of it worsens the Adderall side effects and leads to the withdrawal phase. This phase is marked by the signs of depression, rage, irritability and intense addiction to the drug. Hence one should be aware of all these side effects before opting for the usage of this medication.
