by ADDTabz on January 30, 2013

The brand name Vyvanse under the generic name lisdexamfetamine dimesylate is a popular medication for those suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is prescribed to be used once daily and is effective in treating children, teenagers as well as adults. Vyvanse has a high abuse potential and hence dependency on this drug is quite high. Precaution must be taken for its effective use. It is a stimulant, the overdose or misuse of which may lead to severe health complications and life-threatening dangers even leading to sudden deaths.

Overview:

Vyvanse is only to be used in the treatment of children above the age of six. This drug is usually prescribed by doctors as a part of a complete treatment program including counseling and therapies and should never be used alone. It is a must to consult a doctor before using this drug since it is a stimulant and someone suffering from severe heart diseases or allergy must never take it. The doctor must be informed about any previous medical history and someone using monoamine oxidase inhibitor or MAOI within fourteen days must never consume it.

Vyvanse has various side-effects due to its dependency and high tolerance level. It may cause mild side-effects like irritation, itching, inflammation, stomach pain, abdominal pain, panic, anxiety, dry mouth, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, vomiting tendency, sleeping disorders and weight loss. The moderate side-effects include slow growth process among child leading to slow growth in height and weight, seizure and Tourette’s syndrome. In acute conditions, overdose or abusive tendency might also lead to a person falling in a coma, heart attacks, complete kidney failure and sudden death. It is for this reason that Vyvanse is not considered a safe drug, instead one should take as much precaution as necessary before using it.

Comparisons:

Vyvanse is not the only drug available in the market that is effective in treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There are plenty of others too. A comparison has been done with some other medications to understand their use better:

With Adderall:

Both Adderall and Vyvanse are from the same manufacturer Shire and serve the same purpose, but still have some differences. While Vyvanse is fully d-amphetamine, Adderall is combined with for different d and i-amphetamine making it more effective, yet more harmful. Another difference lies in their release potential. Whereas Vyvanse is released through digestion that leads to long lasting non abusive effect, Adderall is released through bead technology which leads to addiction.

With ADDTabz:

ADDTabz is a completely new product in the market that claims to be far more effective and safer than any other drug used in the treatment of ADHD. While Vyvanse is recommended to be used for short-term purpose, ADDTabz can be used for long-term. ADDTabz is more effective and safe and has no side-effects when compared with Vyvanse, though both of them extend the same amount of energy. ADDTabz can be bought over the counter whereas Vyvanse is strictly a prescription drug.

Conclusion:

As seen from the comparison, Vyvanse is not the only effective drug for treating ADHD, but it has some qualities that differentiate it from the other similar products. Even if someone makes up his mind to use Vyvanse, it is recommended to visit a doctor first and learn about its implications first.
